Introduction: The
Bible teaches that there are different kinds of angels, but none are
like the chubby little cherubs we see on Christmas cards. Angels are
messengers from God, there to do God’s will and bidding. Often when
people saw an angel of God they fell flat on their faces saying I have
seen God. Many angels are found in the Book of Revelation (at the end of
the Bible). One description says, “I saw a mighty angel coming down from
heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face
was like the sun. When he shouted, the voices of seven thunders spoke.” Archangels. Means ruling or chief of Angels. The only archangel named in the Bible is Michael and he is also called one of the chief princes, which would suggest there are a number of them. Gabriel, the only other named angel, means “God’s Hero” and he seems to be God’s special messenger angel. Cherubim, guarding angels. Satan/Lucifer was one of these. Their role is to guard God's Holy domain and presence from any sin and corruption. They are sometimes known as the throne angels as they are seen to be around the throne of God. Seraphs – attending and praising God. When they sang, the door posts and the threshold shook. These angels have six wings. The Bible says in Isaiah 6v2, “Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.” In John’s vision found in Revelation, he saw ten thousand times ten thousand angels surrounding the throne of God. Warrior angels. The Bible talks about the battles going on in the spiritual realms between angelic and demonic forces. Believe it or not, angelic forces are fighting over your life. (In addition to the angels, we are told in Revelation Ch 9v 16 of two hundred million spiritual mounted troops who when God ordains will destroy a third of those living on the earth.) There are many references in the Bible about God’s angels and what they do. Satan and Angels of darkness – Demons. The Bible talks about a beautiful angel who was perfect in beauty, full of wisdom and blameless until his beauty and pride corrupted him. This story has got to be one of the most tragic in the Bible. How an angel who lived with God, saw his majesty and was anointed as a guardian cherub, sinned against God and was cast out of heaven to earth. The awfulness of his rejection by God and the knowledge that his ultimate destiny is everlasting hellfire is something we cannot possibly comprehend. But there is no sympathy for him now or his follower angels, fallen angels or demons. They are totally committed to evil; hating God, and anything he loves. |
